“A unique, safe and non-invasive solution to long-term removal of unwanted facial and body hair”
Suitable for both men and women, for unwanted facial, body and leg hair, treatment with light – both Intense Pulsed Light and laser – works by destroying the hair root to stop re-growth. The light is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hair and this creates heat which in turn destroys the cells responsible for hair growth.
Safe and non-invasive, light treatments represent the only alternative to electrolysis for long-term removal of hair. As the technique is non-invasive there is less trauma caused to the skin than with most other hair removal methods. Techniques such as shaving, waxing and depilatory creams provide only a short-term solution and require regular repeat use.
Darker hair is more easily treated than fair as it contains more melanin. The Orchard Cosmetic Skin Centre is equipped with advanced light technology that enables different settings to be applied to different hair and skin types. This means that at the Orchard you can be confident that your treatment will be tailored specifically to your requirements and will be exactly right for you.
The Orchard Cosmetic Skin Centre offers both Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Laser treatments. In certain situations IPL is preferable to Laser and visa versa. Dr Rhatigan almost always favours IPL over Laser for hair removal because of the greater speed of the treatment. The laser spot size is 5-7mm so covering large areas is quite slow. With IPL treatment the light guides range from 10mm to 50 mm sq, so coverage is much faster. This means less visits and less expense for the patient. However Laser is very useful to treat darker skin types and for some cases where there are individual sparse hairs eg, on the chin.
Treatments can take from 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on which area is being treated, Dr Rhatigan will be happy to give a full assessment during the pre-treatment consultation. Hairs fall out 1 – 3 weeks after each treatment, as the epidermis renews and treatments are conducted every 2 – 8 weeks. Typically 6 or more treatments may be required for maximum results.
Hirsutism or excess/inappropriate hair growth can be an unfortunate symptom of PCOS - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Sadly, PCOS affects 10 per cent of adult premenopausal women and 75% of these can suffer excess facial or body hair as a result.
At the Orchard Cosmetic Skin Centre Dr Rhatigan is experienced in treating PCOS sufferers for hair removal, and she brings empathy as well as knowledge and understanding of the symptoms. An opportunity for a full discussion of Laser and Intense Pulsed Light treatments as well as potential outcomes, is available at pre-treatment consultation.
